Headcannons

Summary: The characters reactions to finding out you're a widow and how it would change your relationship. The Demon Brothers and Diavolo, Barbatos, Simeon, and Solomon

Lucifer had known that you were previously married because of the file he received about you from Lord Diavolo. It was his job to study each of the candidates for the exchange program so he made sure to do his research thoroughly.

However, the file had only read previously married. It didn’t say anything about what had happened to cause the split between you and your spouse. Lucifer assumed it was a divorce.

Lucifer thought the fact that you had been married before was an attractive quality. It showed that you were a mature person and that you knew what it meant to be in a relationship and he respected you for that.

He didn’t find out directly from you that you had lost your spouse. 

He had been in a meeting with Lord Diavolo talking about the same mundane things they always talked about when Diavolo asked Lucifer how you were doing here in the Devildom.

Lucifer told him that he believed you were adjusting well and fitting right in and the news made Diavolo noticeably more relaxed.

Diavolo thought it was wonderful news and talked to Lucifer more about you. During that time, he had mentioned that you were a widow.

The news definitely had Lucifer a bit shaken. You were always so happy around them - he never would have expected that something so sad had happened in your life.

His respect for you increased tenfold at the information. Only the strongest people can go through something like losing their spouse and not crumble into pieces.

He would make sure to take things slow with you. He would never push you or pressure you into a relationship.

He wasn’t sure how much time had passed since you lost them but he wanted to make sure that you had the proper time to grieve.

Even if you had told him that you were ready to be in a relationship again, he’d continuously ask you if you were comfortable with something or if you needed more time.

He’ll let you be the judge of which course the relationship takes because he doesn’t want to mess things up.

Mammon genuinely cared about you, but sometimes his greed got the better of him and he would find himself taking small things from your room to sell for a profit. Things you wouldn’t notice.

He tried not to do it, but if he had no other options, then he would sometimes have to turn to his favorite human for help. Of course, you didn’t know that you were helping him.

Mammon was in a particularly large amount of debt with a witch in the human world and Mammon was desperate to get away from her clutches.

So, he went to your room while you were away and rummaged through some of your things hoping to find anything of value.

That’s when he saw a ring sitting on your dresser. He thanked his lucky stars that he had seen it and quickly took it to sell it without asking any questions.

When you returned to your room and noticed the ring gone, you flipped. You turned your room upside down looking for it, not understanding where it would have gone.

Mammon had entered your room in the middle of your fit and had asked what you were doing. When you explained that your wedding ring was missing, he felt confused. You were married?

That confusion turned into guilt as you began describing the ring and that guilt only grew when you explained that you were married but had tragically lost your spouse and that ring was the only thing you had to remind you of them.

Mammon immediately rushed out of your room to get the ring back. He never would have sold it if he knew the story behind it.

It took the entire day, but he finally managed to bargain for it back. He immediately took it back to you and sheepishly told you what happened before apologizing profusely and promising to never take your stuff without asking again.

Mammon will make sure you don’t even feel like he’s pressuring you into anything with him.

And he also makes sure to take on less risky schemes. He knows that he isn’t on the same level as your spouse. At least not yet. Maybe one day. And if that day ever happened he would never want you to go through the same pain twice and lose someone you loved again.

Levi had found out that you were a widow in the middle of the two of you watching an anime. 

It was one of his favorite anime and he was dying to show you because he thought the pain that the main character had to go through to get to the point where they ended the show was such a beautiful journey and he wanted you to experience the story with him.

But one of those things that the main character had to go through was the loss of their spouse and the scene reminded you a bit too much of your own pain.

When Levi first saw how sad you looked, he thought it was just because you liked the characters.

But when he saw a tear fall from your eyes, he was panicking. It was a sad scene, sure, but not that sad. Even he wasn’t crying and he was a mega fan of the anime.

He paused the anime as quickly as he could and immediately asked you what was wrong. Had he done something that made you upset?

When you explained that you were a widow and that the scene was just a bit too real for you, Levi was surprised. He would have never guessed that you were a widow.

The strength that you had to not only be able to make it through each day but to wear a smile after losing someone like that reminded Levi of the main character.

You managed to impress him every day. Levi didn’t tell you this, but it only made him admire you that much more. You were amazing. 

Levi doesn’t know how to react to it. He was bad in social situations and even worse when there was the potential to mess something up by saying the wrong thing or acting the wrong way.

But, you reassured him that you didn’t want to be treated differently and that your spouse would always be a part of you but you had come to terms with what had happened. 

Levi would always be there for you if you wanted to talk, but he wouldn’t force you to and he doesn’t treat you any differently like you asked. 

He did make sure to respect your spouse’s memory and he supported you in your decisions. He wanted to help you heal and he wanted to help you be happy again.

Satan was a very observant person and he liked to pick up on small details. He would notice you staring off into space sometimes, lost in your thoughts, but he wouldn’t push you to talk about them. 

He noticed how you would sometimes get upset when someone would talk about holidays and couldn’t help but wonder why that was.

He tried to figure it out on his own, but there were a number of things it could be and he hadn’t quite settled on a conclusion.

That was until he paid you a visit in your room one day and saw that there was a ring lying on the dresser. It was a wedding ring, he was sure of it. It was too intricate to be anything else.

But, whose wedding ring was it? He had picked it up to inspect the ring when you came out of the bathroom and saw him looking at it. Satan had seen the sadness in your eyes at the scene and put two and two together.

He handed you back the ring and didn’t pressure you to talk about your previous relationship. If you wanted to talk though, he was all ears. He wanted to know everything about you including what had happened with your spouse.

When you did open up to him, he asked engaging questions, but if you felt uncomfortable answering them, he wouldn’t push you. He wasn’t asking them to pry but rather to learn more about you.

Satan wants to make you as happy as you once were in your first marriage, but he wouldn’t dream of ever trying to make you forget about your spouse.

The two of you had a special love and Satan wanted to have an equally special love with you. But a different love. He didn’t want to replace your spouse, he wanted to be someone you could love just as much.

Asmo had found out about your past relationship when the two of you were going through some of your old photo albums you had brought down to the Devildom.

Asmo loved looking at pictures almost as much as he loved taking them so when you told him you had albums of your past, he was all over them.

He wanted to see every picture you had taken and he enthusiastically looked through them. He noticed someone close to you in one picture and then noticed that same person showing up more and more frequently throughout the photos until his eyes landed on one of you and your spouse on your wedding day.

“Y/N - you’re married?!” Asmo asked, immediately turning his attention to you. He knew that you were marriage material, but he didn’t know that you were actually married.

When you explained that you were married but had lost your spouse, Asmo immediately pulled you into a hug. 

He wasn’t trying to pity you in any way. He just couldn’t imagine losing anyone that was that special to him. He couldn’t imagine losing you.

He wanted to ask if it was something that recently happened or something that happened a while ago because he wanted to properly gauge how to act around you. He wanted to take everything at your pace.

If it was something that happened recently, Asmo would try and do what he could to help you heal. If it was something you needed to do alone, he would respect your choice.

It was a small struggle for Asmo, but he really tried to tone down the provocative flirting with you. He was so used to pushing himself on people and was all about the quickest way to get someone in bed. But, he wants you to know that he genuinely cares about you.

So, he’ll focus on more romantic compliments like telling you that your eyes are beautiful or that you have a perfect smile. 

He knows that your next relationship after losing your spouse would be a process that you would have to try to figure out and he wanted to be there every step of the way.

You and Beel had been spending some time together one day when Beel suddenly got very upset and nostalgic about something that had reminded him of his little sister.

You could see how sad Beel was and how much he missed Lilith, and you let him open up to you, talking about whatever he wanted to talk about.

He apologized for ruining your time together by bringing up such a sad topic and in an attempt to comfort Beel, you accidentally let the fact slip.

You had told him not to apologize for missing Lilith or for remembering her because you have those moments with your spouse as well.

Beel wasn’t sure if he was more surprised that he found out that you were married or that he had found out that you lost your spouse. Either way, he wanted to comfort you the same way that you always comforted him when it came to Lilith.

Beel is one of the best partners to have as a widow because he knew what it was like to lose someone incredibly important to you. It didn’t matter if it was your sister or your spouse - losing someone you love more than anything is always heartbreaking.

Beel knows just as well as you do that their memory could never be forgotten and they could never be replaced in your heart. But, you had such a big heart, and he hoped that there was still room in there for you to consider someone else special.

Beel will encourage you to tell him when something reminds you of your spouse. They sounded like a great person and Beel never wanted you to feel like you couldn’t freely remember them or miss them. They were an important part of your life.

He’ll listen attentively when you do speak about your time with your spouse but he won’t try and bring them up unless you were comfortable with it. 

His love for you wasn’t a competition to their love for you. He was sure he loved you as much as your spouse did, but his love was separate from theirs and he wouldn’t want you to blend them together.

Belphie tends to make small jokes and witty comments about death every so often. Death was a joke to demons so he didn’t really grasp the gravity of what it could mean to humans.

You usually tried not to think about death too much, both from your experience with your spouse and your own experiences in the Devildom, so you weren’t the biggest fan of Belphie’s jokes.

The first time he made a comment in front of you, he noticed how uncomfortable you got and it made him wince. His attack on you had still been somewhat fresh and he was sure that’s why you were so uncomfortable with what he said.

The two of you ended up having a long conversation about what had happened that night and about how Belphie had changed and how he would never hurt you again. You were inclined to believe him, but that didn’t change your opinion about death.

After that talk, Belphie thought things were okay between the two of you, so again, he didn’t hesitate to make another joke when the opportunity arose.

Belphie once again noticed your discomfort and pulled you aside to ask you about it. Were you only trying to be nice when you told him things were okay between the two of you? Because you could be honest with Belphie.

You explained that you were being honest with Belphie when it came to your relationship with him, but you were still uncomfortable with joking about death because you were a widow.

The news completely knocked Belphie down a peg. He gave you a genuine apology before promising not to make those jokes in front of you again. He would have never been disrespectful in front of you if he knew.

Belphie hopes that you’re still comfortable with taking naps with him, but he won’t push you if you aren’t.

Like Beel, he knows what it’s like to lose someone and he wants to make sure you're one hundred percent ready before trying anything.

Diavolo knew that you were a widow before you even came down to the Devildom. It was Barbatos’ job to find candidates for the exchange program that Lucifer would choose from.

When Lucifer had chosen you as the candidate, Diavolo asked Barbatos everything about you. Barbatos was the one who told him that you were a widow and the news made Diavolo’s perspective of you already lean towards the positive side.

Diavolo had thought about marriage once when he was younger. It was tradition for the royal family to be betrothed at a young age and then when they matured and became King, their spouses would rule alongside them.

Diavolo was supposed to make a decision on who his spouse would be, but he believed he was too young to make that decision. He wanted to marry at the right time and for the right reasons.

So he begged and pleaded with his father to not force him into a marriage and he became the first of his very long line to break that tradition. 

After getting to know you more, the idea of marriage once again popped into his head. He thought you would make a wonderful spouse and he could imagine you ruling the Devildom alongside him.

But he kept the fact that you were a widow at the forefront of his mind. He took things slow and allowed you to really get to know him before trying to make a move. 

He wanted to make sure you were ready for a new relationship before even thinking about entering into one with you. 

He’ll be completely respectful of your previous relationship and he would never ask you to forget about your spouse.

But, he does want to make you happy. He wants to shower you in love and adoration, so as soon as you are ready, please allow him to.

He promises to treat you just as good as your first spouse because you deserve the world.

As previously stated, Barbatos was the one who searched the human world for candidates for the exchange program. He had stumbled across you and was taken away by you. You were effortlessly beautiful and kind with a smile that could warm anyone’s heart.

With the gentle and innocent look you were giving off, Barbatos was sure nothing bad had ever happened in your life. So when he found out you were a widow, he was shocked. 

Your resilience was incredible for a human and Barbatos knew that you were something special. Something the Devildom needed.

If it was his decision, he would have immediately chosen you, but it was his job to remain impartial, so he simply added your name to the list.

When he found out that Lucifer had chosen you out of all the names, Barbatos was grateful that he would get the opportunity to know you better.

The more he got to know you, though, the harder it was for him to know the fact that you were a widow. He was easily falling for your charms just like everyone else, but he was afraid to say anything because he didn’t want to push you into a relationship if you weren’t ready.

He knew that you found out about his powers and he hoped that you wouldn’t ask him to use them to bring back your spouse or return to you a time before they passed away. Theoretically, he could do it, and if you had asked him to he probably would. 

He wouldn’t be able to say no to something that would make you so happy. But he didn’t know what consequences would come from it in the future and he wasn’t sure he was ready to lose you without getting the chance to really get to know you.

If the two of you get to a relationship point, he’ll ask you about your expectations of him, and much like he does in his work, he’ll strive to exceed every single one of them.

As an angel, Simeon never got to experience the love that humans shared. He had read about it and seen it from afar, but he never understood what it felt like or how deeply it ran.

He knew the concept of death well, but like demons, it didn’t hold the same significance. A human’s entire lifespan felt like the blink of an eye to Simeon. He had seen so many humans pass away through the ages that it didn’t affect him much. 

After he met you, his idealism changed. He could see how much love you had in your heart and how selfless your love was and it encouraged him to learn more about the love between humans.

He learned about marriage and the vows you said to one another and he thought it was beautiful - to promise to love and cherish someone forever. You would have to really love someone with your whole being to promise something like that.

His idea of death also changed. He didn’t want a little less than a century with you, he wanted eons. You had become someone so important to him and he couldn’t imagine losing you.

When you told Simeon that you were a widow, he was glad that he did some research on the topic so he could properly understand the severity of the conversation.

Human lifespans were already so short so to lose someone like your spouse so early must have been devastating. 

Simeon had always been a comforting presence and that only strengthened when it came to you talking about your past. He was so receptive and caring and he let you talk about it as much as you were comfortable talking about.

He let you come to him instead of trying to pursue you because he cared enough about you to not want you in any capacity that was the slightest bit forced or pressured.

He does hope that one day you’ll accept his love and allow him to promise to love and cherish you for the rest of his days as well.

Solomon was the only one who could truly understand the seriousness of what it meant to be a widow. The pain of the situation and the pieces of you that are lost along with them.

Solomon had lost so many people in his long life. That was one of the curses of immortality. He knew what it felt like to lose someone you loved and it didn’t matter how many times it happened, it always hurt.

And as a human, you didn’t have centuries to get over someone’s death like the demon brothers had to get over Lilith’s. 

You have to grieve and move on or at least come to peace with what had happened considerably quickly compared to the other beings, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the rest of your time alive.

You had told Solomon about losing your spouse because you knew that he would be able to provide you with comfort. The kind of comfort only another human could give you.

And Solomon knew that even if you had come to peace with what happened you would always miss them and love them.

It was safe to say Solomon had fallen for you and he wanted to pursue a relationship with you, but he never wanted to replace them. 

He knew that they would be a part of any relationship between you and Solomon. That’s what happens when you lose someone before you’ve had enough time with them.

He was completely supportive of you talking to him about your spouse and sharing any memories you had with them. 

He remained your friend until you felt comfortable enough to transition into the next step in your relationship. When you did, Solomon made sure to make just as many memories with you while also respecting the ones you had. 

He never wanted to try and replace your spouse but he wanted you to experience a new love. One that he hoped you would treasure as much as the one you once had before you knew him.

Give me a 9 or 10-year-old Dick Grayson who has been Robin for a little bit but is still figuring out his relationship with Bruce Wayne. They are more than a guardian and his ward but not quite yet father and son. They both want that but neither of them have gotten up the courage to say it.

Now give me a hostage situation, during some kind of gala or charity event for the school. One where a lot of rich people and their rich kids are present so it’s very important for Bruce and Dick to be selling the whole secret ID thing, so they have to looking just as pathetic and scared as the other people around them.

The bad guys immediately recognize Bruce Wayne and his brat, and they pull Dick away from Bruce. They threaten Dick’s life, saying that Bruce better cooperate or he’ll have to find a new orphan to to take care of, not like it would be a problem since Gotham has so many.

Dick thinks the fear in Bruce’s eyes is an act. That’s not just Bruce after all, it’s Batman. The Dark Knight. He’s literally not allowed to be afraid, so that look can’t be real.

But it is.

Bruce hasn’t been this terrified since the night he lost his parents. His heart is racing and he has to physically push down a panic attack because that isn’t going to save Dick right now. He doesn’t know what to do. He can’t fight these people, not when he is Bruce Wayne. Without the cape and cowl, he has to be a helpless playboy.

So he does the only thing he can think of: he begs.

Bruce Wayne drops to his knees and he pleads with the masked goons to spare Dick’s life. He’s just a boy. A boy who has already lived through enough trauma. Bruce understands if these people hate him and if they want to hurt him instead, that’s fine. But he begs them not to hurt Dick.

He promises to give them anything. They can have his fortune, his life, whatever they want. Just spare Dick. That’s all he asks.

And a masked woman steps forward, leaning down in front of Bruce with what he knows is a sick smirk. The air around them thins and Dick feels himself shiver fifteen feet away. He hadn’t been expecting Bruce to say any of those things. Sure they were close, they had to be as the Dynamic Duo. But he thought after his parents died, there wouldn’t be another adult who would speak about him like that.

That would care enough to swallow their pride and beg, just for him.

Dick’s ears perk up when he hears the woman speak.

“Anything?” She asks. She sounds delighted, almost like she had won some sort of bet at a bar and not that she was leading a hostage situation.

“Anything.” Bruce confirms.

“Okay.” She stands, pointing her gun in Dick’s general direction. “I want your Mommy’s pearls.”

Bruce’s body freezes in shock.

Dick closes his eyes now resigned. Bruce may have been willing to say he would give anything but those were just words. It was one thing to say it, it was entirely different to actually do it. And Martha Wayne’s pearls were too high a price.

Dick can’t blame Bruce either. He imagined being asked to give up his mother’s wedding ring and felt his stomach turn. No, he wouldn’t begrudge Bruce for changing his mind—

“Done.”

Dick’s head shoots up, eyes wide with surprise. He had to have misheard. Bruce didn’t. He wouldn’t…

“Give me a phone. I’ll call my Butler and he will bring them here.”

And Dick cries. Not because someone is holding him hostage, he doesn’t care about that, but because a wave of realization crashes down onto him with an unforgiving strength.

He isn’t an orphan anymore. He has a dad. Bruce loves him.

Bruce ends up calling Alfred and Alfred, being the badass that he is, gives the Gotham PD a heads up but drives there anyway just so he can sucker punch the woman who demanded his late mistress’s pearls just to psychologically torture his son while holding his grandson hostage.

He then takes the pair home. There’s a small tin of cookies in the back for them to share on the drive back.

Can't stop thinking about being Ford's assistant and you're there when Stan shows up and the portal mess happens... you just lost your best friend, and sure his brother might be a bit weird but dammit you are not leaving this weird little town until Ford is back! So you and Stan work together and live together trying to get him back... you eventually agree with his whole "Mystery Shack" business and fall into a sort of strange but comfortable domesticity.

You teach him about interdimensional physics and quantum engineering, and he teaches you how to be a better liar and how to mark up prices just enough that people don't complain. The two of you get greasy meals at midnight in grimy 24/7 diners after hours of trying to decipher Ford's journals... you take long car rides listening to the fuzzy radio... you watch shitty TV together and who really minds if his arm finds its way around your shoulder, or if his hand wanders a little too close to your thigh to be considered platonic. It's really not a big deal you tell yourself, if you find his over-the-top 'Mr. Mystery' act more endearing than annoying, and if the wall between your two rooms seems a bit too thick some nights.

And well, it's just natural that you two get married a few years down the line because "Mr. Mystery needs a Mrs. Mystery... just think of all the merchandise we could sell!" and if Stan blushes when he sees you in your thrifted white dress on the way to the local courthouse- well he's never seen me dressed up, that's all- and if the rings you exchange are definitely more than you two can really afford but no less meaningful, you don't blink an eye.

It's not until 30 years later and the twins have come into your life, between Mabel's puppies-and-rainbows attitude towards love, more specifically the love she swears to see between you and Stan, as well as watching the man bond in an almost fatherly way to Dipper (who reminds you so much of Ford it hurts sometimes) that you begin to reevaluate your guys' relationship. The little touches, the playful flirting, the hours spent in each other's company. What once was a marriage of convenience, a relationship which you could swear was just two good friends, now is subject to your critical review as you shakily realize. Shit. I'm in love.

Before you can figure out how to tell your husband of 30 years you're in love with him, ta-da Ford is back! He's shocked to find that his brash brother and quiet assistant are now married, and after watching your interactions for a few days assumes it is a marriage of love. It's not until you ramble to him in a panic that you "have feelings for Stan and probably have since you'd first met him but we only got married for practicality and he probably doesn't see me like that and we just flirt for fun and he's your brother what do I do??"that Ford sighs heavily and in true annoying brother fashion, forces the two of you to confront each other.

I bet you didn't see this coming reader, but ofc Stan returns your feelings with a sort of blinking awe. He's torn between a sort of excited "I've still got it" and a sheepish "It took us 30 years of MARRIAGE to realize we like-like each other Jesus Christ..." But your relationship had already been so couple-y that the two of you adjust easily.

ALSO also... since Stan faked his death and took Ford's identity technically you're married to Ford... he very graciously divorces you (sorry Ford girlies... it's just for this imagine </3) and you and Stan have an Actual Wedding where you two are Officially In Love. Same little courthouse, same too-expensive rings, but different because now you are surrounded by family and friends as you happily enter officially married life. Sigh... idiots in love <3
